Boiler faults always seem to land in winter, and the L2 fault is one of the most common on the Ideal Logic range. If your boiler is showing an L2 code, this page explains what it means, what causes it, and how it gets fixed.

What is an Ideal L2 fault?

In short, the boiler has lost its flame.

The L2 code points to an ignition or flame-loss fault on Ideal Logic boilers. When the boiler can’t detect a flame, it shuts off the gas and goes into lockout as a safety measure. It won’t fire again until the underlying fault is fixed.

This is almost always a gas supply problem or a failed component, so it’s a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you’re in the capital, you can book a boiler repair in London to get it diagnosed and put right safely.

Which Ideal boilers show the L2 code?

The L2 code is used across the Ideal Logic range from Ideal Heating. It applies to all three boiler types in that range: combi, system and heat-only. It also shows on the Logic Combi ESP1 models, so the same advice applies whether you have a Logic Combi 24, 30 or 35.

What causes an L2 fault?

There are a few reasons an Ideal boiler shows an L2 fault. The most common ones

  • Frozen condensate pipe – in freezing weather the pipe blocks and triggers the fault. This is the most likely cause in winter.
  • Faulty flame-sensing electrode – dirt or damage stops it detecting the flame.
  • Faulty wiring – a loose or damaged connection between the electrode and the PCB stops the signal getting through.
  • Blocked flue – poor ventilation can put the flame out.
  • Faulty spark generator or electrode – ignition problems on start-up.
  • Low gas pressure – too little gas and the boiler won’t ignite.
  • Faulty gas valve – a stuck or failed valve disrupts the gas flow.
  • Gas leak – a serious cause that needs immediate attention.

Flame sensor and PCB faults

The most common cause is the flame sensor. The PCB is the boiler’s control centre, and it needs a signal from the flame sensor to confirm a flame is present. No signal, and it shuts off the gas. That’s the L2 lockout. An engineer will test the sensor and clean or replace it.

Gas valve faults

The gas valve controls the gas flow to the burner. It has moving parts that can stick over time, which stops gas flowing correctly and triggers L2. Sometimes it sticks open and the flame goes out. An engineer may be able to free it, but a failing valve is often cheaper to replace, especially if other parts are worn.

Low gas pressure and supply

The boiler won’t ignite if it isn’t getting enough gas. On a larger boiler, check the supply has been upgraded to suit the demand – an undersized pipe can starve the burner. It’s also worth ruling out a wider supply problem: try another gas appliance, and on a pre-pay meter check there’s credit. Low pressure from the supplier can cause it too.

Frozen condensate pipe

In cold weather the condensate pipe can freeze and block, backing up into the boiler and causing the fault. The pipe is usually plastic and runs outside to a drain, so it’s exposed to the weather. A frozen gas meter regulator can cause similar problems. A Gas Safe engineer can thaw the pipe, reroute it for better flow, and lag exposed sections to stop it happening again.

How to fix an L2 fault code

Diagnosing and repairing an L2 fault is a job for a qualified heating engineer. The one exception is a frozen condensate pipe, which you can often thaw yourself.

Thaw a frozen condensate pipe

Find the pipe outside – it’s the plastic one running to a drain. Pour warm water over the frozen section to clear the blockage. Don’t use boiling water, as it can crack the pipe. If the boiler still won’t reset, call an engineer.

Clean or replace the flame sensor

An engineer checks the sensor for corrosion or soot and cleans it with a soft brush or cloth. No harsh chemicals – they damage the component. If cleaning doesn’t fix it, the sensor is replaced. A new flame-sensing electrode can cost up to around £300 fitted.

Replace the ignition electrode

If the boiler isn’t sparking on start-up, the ignition electrode or leads may have worn out, often from moisture build-up. These create the spark that lights the flame, so a worn electrode stops ignition and triggers L2. An engineer will replace the electrode or ignitor unit as needed.

Check gas pressure and supply

An engineer checks the pressure at both the boiler and the gas meter. If the boiler needs more gas than the supply can deliver, the pipework may need upgrading to a larger diameter. A frozen meter regulator can be lagged to protect it.

Clear a blocked flue

A blocked flue stops the boiler venting properly and can put the flame out. An engineer clears any debris or obstruction so it runs safely.

Does an L2 fault mean you need a new boiler?

Usually not. An L2 fault on its own isn’t a reason to replace a boiler.

That said, if the gas valve has failed and other parts are worn, a new combi can be the more sensible long-term choice. Boilers lose efficiency as they age, so if yours is old and faulting often, it may be worth pricing up installing a new boiler.
