Where would we be if it hadn’t been for Sir John Harrington? Well, literally ‘up to our necks in it!’ John who, I hear you ask? Well, he was the Godson of Queen Elizabeth 1, an English courtier (companion/advisor). This clever adaptation permanently kept water in the toilet bowl and in the sewer (where it belonged). It also prevented those strong odours creeping back into the toilet/bathroom or rest of the house. So, where did all our waste go back then? Mostly onto the streets of London and in the River Thames! Not good as the Thames was also used as a source of drinking water and washing. The summer of 1858 saw the "Great Stink" overwhelm London.
Typhoid fever and cholera swept the nation. Along came Joseph Bazalgette who in 1870 and after several years, finally completed the underground sewer system directing our poo downstream of the city of London into the Thames Estuary (at high tide). We all benefit from these inventors genius even today, every time we flush our toilet.

Q:Why does my toilet bubble and gurgle when it flushes?
A: It might be a fault in the fill valves, it may be a clog creating negative air pressure, instead of flowing through the pipe freely, the air pushes it back causing a bubbling/gurgling noise.
You may see the the toilet water bubble which means the toilet or drain line has a blockage? It could be a build up of calcium on the internal bore of the pipe or something similar?
Q:What does it mean if your toilet makes a hissing sound?
A: Usually as water passes through a restricted opening (under pressure) it generates vibrations that is heard as ‘hissing’. This may suggest the valve needs replacing.
Q: My toilet keeps refilling?
A: This can happen randomly (referred to as ‘ghost filling’) or continually fills after a flush. It usually indicates the flush valve is not seating correctly due to a part having worn. Not good if you’re on a water meter!

Q: Increase the power of the toilet flush?
A: If you feel the strength of the flush is insufficient to remove the waste here is a simple guide to solving this problem. Due to water conservation programmes the fill level on many toilets is lower than before. Water conservation is great but if we aren’t getting a clean flush it can cause other problems i.e. waste not being washed completely into the external sewer. It will then harden and cause a build up point, for further waste to adhere to. It gets bigger until you experience back pressure and your toilet starts overflowing!
- Remove the lid from your cistern and locate the water level line (scribed on the rear of the cistern attached to the wall).
- If the water level is below the scribed water line, it means the amount of water in the cistern is insufficient to remove the waste.
- Increase the water level fill setting on the float valve. This allows more water into the cistern. This can be done either by hand or with a screwdriver.
- Flush the toilet, if the water is level with the line on the rear of the cistern all good. This should give a stronger and cleaner flush.
