Your Ideal boiler shows a fault code when it spots a problem and shuts itself down to stay safe. The code is a shorthand that tells you, and an engineer, roughly what's wrong.
Two rules cover most of it:
- F codes are faults. L codes are lockouts: the boiler tried, failed, and stopped itself.
- A single number or letter like 0, C, D or F usually isn't a fault at all. It's the boiler telling you what it's doing.
The most common code, F1, means low water pressure. You can usually clear that yourself in a few minutes. Most other codes, such as flame loss, fan faults and PCB faults, need a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What Ideal fault codes actually mean
Ideal boilers run a self-check the whole time they're powered. The PCB, the printed circuit board and the boiler's brain, watches pressure, temperature, the flame and the fan.
When something reads wrong, the PCB shuts the boiler down and puts a code on the display. That shutdown is a safety feature. It protects the boiler and your home.
The codes are the same across most modern Ideal boilers, so a Logic, a Logic+ and a Vogue all speak the same language.
Codes you can often fix yourself
A couple of Ideal faults are fair game for a homeowner or landlord. No tools, no gas work.
F1 - low water pressure
The Ideal F1 fault code is the one people see most. It means the water pressure in your heating system has dropped too low for the boiler to fire.
- What it means: the system has lost water over time. Often a slow leak, or it follows bleeding the radiators.
- How to fix it: re-pressurise the boiler. Find the filling loop, a silver braided hose under the boiler. Open both valves slowly, watch the pressure gauge, and close them once it reaches 1 to 1.5 bar.

Frozen condensate pipe (cold-weather L2 or F2)
In a cold snap, an ignition or flame-loss code is often a frozen condensate pipe, the white plastic pipe running outside. The blockage stops the boiler running.
You can sometimes thaw it yourself. Pour warm (not boiling) water over the frozen section outside, then reset the boiler. If it freezes again, lag the pipe.
Codes that need a Gas Safe engineer
Anything touching gas, the flame, the fan or the electronics is off-limits for DIY. These are the codes to stop and book an Ideal boiler repair in London for.
F2, FN or LN - flame loss
The Ideal F2 fault code means the flame lit, then went out mid-cycle.
- What it means: the boiler ignited fine, but lost the flame unexpectedly.
- What to check: see whether your other gas appliances work. If they don't, it's a gas supply problem. If they're fine, it points to a blocked flue or a faulty gas valve, both engineer jobs.

L2 - ignition failure (lockout)
The Ideal L2 code means the boiler tried to light and never detected a flame, so it locked out.
- What it means: repeated failed ignition attempts.
- What to check: gas supply first, then a frozen condensate pipe in winter. Beyond that, the ignition lead, electrode or gas valve, needs an engineer.

F8, L8, F9 or L9 - overheat lockout or PCB fault
What L9 means depends on your model. On most Ideal boilers it's an overheat lockout: the boiler has sensed it's running too hot and shut the burner down to protect itself. On newer Ideal Logic models, L9 and F9 point at the PCB, the boiler's control board, instead. F8 and L8 are PCB or configuration faults. Your boiler's manual will confirm which applies.
- What it means: either the boiler is overheating, or there's a fault in the electronic control system.
- What to do: nothing yourself. Both causes need an engineer, who'll check the flow and circulation on an overheat, or whether the PCB can be repaired or needs replacing.

F7 - low mains voltage
F7 means the incoming electricity supply is reading too low.
- What it means: not enough power reaching the boiler.
- What to do: an engineer or electrician checks the boiler's connections and the mains supply.
FU - sensor or isolation valve issue
FU usually flags a sensor reading or a problem around the isolation valves.
- What it means: the boiler can't get a sensible reading and won't run safely.
- What to do: book an engineer to test the sensors and valves.
L6 - flame detected with no demand
L6 means the boiler is seeing a flame signal when nothing has asked for heat or hot water.
- What it means: a false flame signal, often a sensor or gas valve fault.
- What to do: this one's an engineer's. A false flame reading is a safety concern.
The rest at a glance
F3 is a fan fault. L4/F4 and L5/F5 are thermistor (temperature sensor) faults. F6 is an outside sensor fault. FD means no water flow detected. L1 is a lockout from a high flow temperature or low water flow. LC means too many resets in 15 minutes, so switch the boiler off to clear it. All of these need an engineer.

Ideal status codes (not faults)
Some readings on the display aren't faults at all. They tell you what the boiler is doing.
- Status 0 - standby. The boiler is on and waiting, with no demand for heat or hot water. Normal unless you're cold and it still won't fire. Read more on Status 0.
- Status C - central heating is running.
- Status D - hot water is running.
- Status F - frost protection is running.
One to clear up: “203 system standby” and “IL 203” are Worcester Bosch readings, not Ideal. They mean the same thing as Ideal's Status 0, the boiler is on standby with no demand. If your Ideal boiler is on standby and you do want heat, check the thermostat is calling, the timer is in an on period, and the pressure is above 1 bar.
Codes people search that aren't Ideal codes
F28 is a common search, but it isn't an Ideal code. It belongs to Vaillant, Glow-worm and Saunier Duval boilers, where it means ignition failure or no flame detected after three attempts.
The Ideal equivalent is L2 (ignition lockout) or F2 (flame loss). If you've got an Ideal boiler and you typed F28 from memory, check the display again, it'll be an L or F code.
Ideal Logic Combi C30 problems (and other models)
C30 isn't a fault code either. The Ideal Logic Combi C30 is a 30kW combi model, and there's also a Logic+ C30 and a Logic Max C30.
So “Logic Combi C30 problems” really means the everyday faults on that model, and they're the same codes as the rest of the range: F1 for pressure, L2 for ignition, F2 for flame loss, and so on. Work through the relevant section above.

How to reset an Ideal boiler
Once you've fixed a fault, or if you think the code appeared by mistake, you may need to reset. The reset method depends on your model.
- Ideal Logic: turn the control knob to the reset position.
- Ideal Logic+: press the reset button once.
- Ideal Vogue and Vogue Max: switch the boiler off, set the heating controls between 30°C and 80°C, then switch it back on.
- Ideal Mini: press the reset button once.
- Ideal Mexico HE: press and hold reset for 2 seconds, then release.
- Ideal Isar: press and hold reset for 2 seconds, then release.
- Ideal Icos: press and hold reset for 2 seconds, then release.

One warning: if the code comes straight back after a reset, the underlying fault is still there. Resetting over and over without fixing the cause can cause more damage. That's the point to stop and call someone.
