What the Ideal Logic FD fault code means
The FD code means there’s no water flow through the boiler. That usually comes down to low pressure, a blocked or faulty pump, or a leak somewhere in the central heating system.
When the boiler can’t detect flow, it shuts down to protect itself. This is called a lockout. It keeps the internal parts safe until the fault is sorted.

What causes the Ideal FD fault code
There are a few common reasons your Ideal Logic boiler shows FD.
Low water pressure
Your boiler needs a certain pressure to work, normally between 1 and 2 bar and ideally around 1.3 bar. If it drops below that, the boiler may not register any flow and the FD code shows up.
Blocked or damaged pump
The pump pushes water around the heating system. If it’s blocked or worn, flow can stop and you get an FD error. The usual culprits are heating sludge, a mix of rust and debris that builds up over time, and general wear on the pump’s shaft and bearings.
Incorrectly fitted pump
If the boiler has recently been moved or installed, the pump may not be sitting right. A badly positioned pump affects flow and can trigger the FD code.
A leak in the system
Leaks anywhere, in the boiler or the pipework, drop the pressure and disrupt flow. They’re not always obvious. Even a small breach can cause problems.
How to fix an Ideal Logic boiler showing FD
Some of this you can do yourself. The rest needs an engineer. Work through these steps in order.
Step 1 – Repressurise the boiler
Low pressure is the easiest thing to rule out. If you keep losing pressure, it’s worth reading up on low water pressure first. To top it up:
- Check the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler. If it reads under 1 bar, that’s your problem.
- Find the filling loop at the bottom, usually two blue taps.
- Open both taps until they line up with the pipes. Watch the gauge climb to around 1.3 bar.
- Close the taps once you’re there.
If the pressure won’t hold or drops again, there’s likely a leak or a bigger fault.
Step 2 – Check for leaks
Look over the boiler and nearby pipes for drips or pooling water, and listen for dripping. If you spot a leak, switch the boiler off and call an engineer.
Step 3 – Listen to the pump
A noisy pump usually means sludge or wear. An engineer can powerflush the system to clear sludge. If the pump has failed, replacement is typically £100 to £200 depending on the model.
Step 4 – Check the pump is fitted correctly
If the boiler was recently installed or moved, the pump may be in the wrong position. An engineer can realign it. If it’s down to a fresh installation, the fix may be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.
Step 5 – Deal with a leak
Fixing a boiler leak starts with finding the source, which sometimes means checking the whole system. A simple job like a damaged copper joint is cheap to repair. Worn pump seals and similar parts cost more. Leaks can also damage other components, so an engineer will check for water damage. Worst case, water reaches the PCB, the most expensive part to replace.
Step 6 – Call a Gas Safe engineer
If FD is still showing after all that, get a Gas Safe heating engineer in. They can find leaks, repair or swap the pump, and check for anything else stopping proper flow.
Which Ideal models show the FD code
You’ll see the FD code most often on:
- Ideal Logic+
- Ideal Logic Combi
- Ideal Logic Heat, including the H15
- Ideal Heating Vogue
Check your manual to confirm how the code shows on your model. It’s also worth checking the other Ideal boiler fault codes if your boiler has thrown up more than one.

To cut the chance of FD returning and keep the boiler healthy:
- Book an annual boiler service with a Gas Safe engineer so worn parts get caught early.
- Fit a magnetic filter to keep sludge out of the system.
- Check the pressure now and then so it stays steady.
