Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How much time does an electrical repair take?

No one can give you the exact repair time without looking at the problem. Normally small electrical problems can be fixed within minutes/hours or days depending on the complexity of the problem.

Q. What are the causes of an electrical failure?

The reasons can be manyfold for an electrical failure. The most common is caused by a loose connection, ingress of moisture, poor insulation, wire corrosion, overload, or poor installation. Where would we be without electricity but it is lethal, invisible, and can kill! It’s a great friend but a deadly enemy! Electrical repairs must always be left to the qualified professional electrician

Q. Is it safe to do electrical wiring repair myself?

Only if you are qualified, otherwise you risk serious injury or even death. Part P of the Building Regulations restricts DIY electrical work on grounds of safety. So, without the above qualifications don’t risk it – DIY lives matter!

Q. When should a house be rewired?

There is no exact time frame for a rewire but wiring over 30 years may need some upgrading, at least in part. This may include changing the fuse box with a state-of-the-art consumer unit. If you can check the wiring and notice the wire cable is coated in rubber and not PVCu coated, then it’s usually a sign of really old wiring and a rewire is recommended. Having your property checked every 10 years is good advice, to keep abreast of any additions and or changes to building regulations. Not sure if a partial/complete rewire is needed then call serviceteam to investigate. Our professional NICEIC approved electricians will advise you on the current condition of the wiring in your property and give recommendations.

Q. What if only half of the circuits are working?

If you notice only part of your property has an electrical supply, first check the main fuse box/consumer unit, it may have been caused by an electrical surge or using too many appliances at once can trip out a circuit. All can be easily restored by flicking up the circuit switches.

Q. Fuses keep tripping – is it dangerous?

We all love kitchen gadgets, microwaves, kettles, blenders, toasters, dishwashers, etc, if all in use at the same time it’s likely you will regularly trip out the fuse box/circuit breakers. As the number of household appliances increases it’s worth considering upgrading the consumer unit. If it trips out on the odd occasion, once or twice a month then it’s normal but if it starts tripping on a regular basis, it could be something more serious and recommend an electrical inspection/investigation.

Q. What should I do in case of an electrical fire?

In case of an electrical fire, switch off the electrical supply from the fuse box (if safe to do so). Do not throw water on the fire as it conducts electricity! If you don’t have an extinguisher (carbon dioxide and dry powder are only recommended for electrical fires, not foam) smother the fire with a blanket to starve the fire of oxygen (if safe to do so). If it is or about to get out of control, call 999 without delay.

Q. Locate a professional electrician near you?

It’s easy to find a professional electrician near you, Just go to Checkatrade, WHICH or Trustpilot to access a company’s customer review platform. This will give a good indication as to how the general public rate a particular company. Just type in “electrical repair near me” and contact the company that ticks your boxes. If you are based in Greater London why not contact serviceteam directly through our online portal. If you book an appointment online you receive a 5% discount. Q. What are signs of electrical fault?

There are certain signs that suggest an electrical fault. From a crackling noise, which usually indicates a loose wire arcing across a terminal, when appliances seem to have just ‘died’ or an intermittent fault indicated by a light flickering, which could be related to a more serious underlying issue. If a light goes dim/flickers could mean a loose bulb or connection anywhere in the circuit.
